Starting problem
Octavia 2 2.0 TDi DSG 2005 50,000 miles
All lights come up as usual, OK. Glow plug & air bag arm go out.
Turn key to start cranking and nothing happens, no obvious noises at all.
Try again or later may or may not start, once started OK if restated again.

Taken to Skoda garage no faults on VAG com or faults found
Anybody had similar problem or any ideas?

Anybody know if starter can be shorted to operate when this happens?
There is a 40 amp fuse for the starter, does this supply the starter motor mounted solenoid? Would applying juice to this operate it or is there a CAN bus or other communication with starter motor itself needed?

My 52 plate Octavia 1.9tdi has been difficult to start for several months.. I changed the glow plugs, no different.. After a period of starting up after holding the key for about 20 secs it would normally start. Then a week ago no go at all.. I had to call Green Flag to try. He had no luck and finally taken to local garage . they said that there was no compression and the engine spun over very fast. and thought all sorts of trouble,eg cambelt, head gasket etc etc. After about an hour of trying to start it it did, and sounded fine. So they decided to take it to the nearest diesel specialist, They have diagnosed Inlet manifold flap unit. This apparatenly would explain the rapid turn over of the engine and low compression. They say if this unit sticks open then there is no intake of air and therefore the engine will not start..The cost of this is in the region of £400! so I hope this is the cause,
There will be an Octavia Estate up for sale when this is sorted!:aargh4:
Any comments if this is a common problem...

Howard..
