Could really use some advice

Hi, I have a 1996 2.0 GL Auto Sharan, yesterday after going out and returning to the vehicle it refused to start. The ignition switches on but nothing when turned to the start position except for 2 clicks from the auto shift. On closer examination the solenoid that engages when the ignition is on that prevents you from moving out of drive without first depressing the brake pedal, engages when the ignition is first swithced on but then immediately disengages hence the 2 clicks from the auto shift area, this allows the auto shift to be moved regardless as to whether the brake is depressed or not. I have tried disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it to "reset" the system but no joy. I am assuming this is related possibly to some control box failure somewhere but have no idea where to find the control box that responsible for this. Any help would be grately appreciated or if anyone has had a similar problem what did it turn out to be. Is there anything obvious I can check.
