Is the battery earth strap just the negative lead on the battery. Im replacing the ignition switch at the mo and first step is to disconnect the battery earth strap.

Yes. Just undo the 10mm nut on the negative battery lead, lift the lead off of the post, and move it out of the way so it can't accidentally touch the post again.
