Golf Gti MK2 8v 'Ticking'

I have an 1986 8v and the car has been dry stored for the last few years. It has developed an intermittent fault in that when the engine is started, there appears to be a 'ticking' coming from what sounds like a tappet? Sometimes it does..sometimes it doesn't.. Can anyone shed some light on this for me, cause I want to bring her out for the summer.

Had a similar problem on a mk 3 jetta gti which appeared at about 90,000 miles was told by mechanic that yes there was a little wear on tappet and that it takes a minute or two for the oil to circulate to the upper parts of the engine (hydraulically operated).It could be down to a very slight variation in shim wear.
On mine the ticking stopped within a minute of start up and ran sweet as a nut after.I sold the car with 130,000 miles on the clock having had no further problems and the ticking being only slightly worse at start up.
If in doubt get some more opinions (always a good idea).
I was told that you can have the job done but it it is possible to still get the ticking afterwards!
Get some more opinions before doing anything.
