My 97 A4 1.8t still has its original exhaust (not bad for almost 14 yearsand 120000 miles).
On recent trip around Scotland it returned almost 50 mpg so engine in good nick.
Although exhaust sound, could the "breathing" be compromised by such an old system?
I know a sports system would help but I want to stay standard.

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

dont fix whats not broke. my 94 coupe still has its original system, but audi do fit proper stainless exhausts to their cars, which are built to last, and last they do. until it starts to blow, or the cat fails, i would stick with it, unless you have some money burning a big hole that you want to get rid of.
incidentally, how on earth do you get 50 mpg from a 1.8t ???

I know.
It amazed me too.
Part of the tour around Scotland was on Mull where if you can get into top it's only for a couple of miles or so on the main road.
Must be the way I drive (old codger see!!) and an engine in good nick, although since I picked up points I do tend to drive a bit steadier.

I will stick with the old pipes!

Cheers
