Netbook HDD faulty,managed to clone it to external HDD ok.Fitted new HDD but cannot start up to reclone.

Can anyone explain simply how to reboot a netbook from an external hdd or USB flash drive?

Depends on how you cloned it. I tend to use a windows pre installation environment http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303891 when I have no other way to start-up the computer. Assuming you don't have a CD-ROM drive you will need to make it boot from a memory stick using this method: http://4sysops.com/archives/build-a-bootable-windows-pe-3-0-usb-drive-with-rescue-tools-part-1/

Then say if you like myself use ghost to clone a drive you can drop that in the root directory the memory stick and run it through command line.

Hope that't not too complicated and helps.

That doesn't work for me.It wont find my flash in the command line.
Looks like a trip to computer shop then.

sorry mate haven't had a chance to read you message until now. I'm a bit lost as to how you manage to get to command line without loading anything. Do you mean the boot up screen doesn't allow you to select a usb drive?

Which make and model of netbook are you using ill try find out more for you.

Thank you for your efforts,I've took it into computer shop now.
I could still boot up from the original HDD,although it were real slow.
The problem I had was when I followed steps from here;
http://4sysops.com/archives/build-a-bootable-windows-pe-3-0-usb-drive-with-rescue-tools-part-1/
Typed in run,cmd etc etc,it wouldn't recognize the flash/removable disk
Thanks again Happy New Year:beerchug:
