l own an '03 Passat TDl 130 PD, its covered 33,000 mls and is four years old, my question is what is the correct cambelt changing interval for this model? l have had conflicting information regarding this matter, from, four yearly or 60,000 mls.

Your help on this matter will be grateflly accepted

it four yearly or 60k whichever comes first, so you need to change the belt.

It may seems allot but as it the end of the engine if it breaks then get it done.

Thanks Onsarob, l've been quoted £395 for cambelts x 2, tensioner and an alternator belt. l've been told its advisable to change the water pump as a praventative measure. Two questions, 1, is the quote of £395 reasonable and 2,would change the water pump?

I just went through th every same thing with my 130 sport tdi aswell, only my car had covered just 26k, but was 4years old. I got a few quotes and the price you quote sounds like it came straight from a VW dealer, cus thats what i was quoted.

I ended up getting the bits myself for a heavily discounted price £80, and my mate changed all belts and the oil and filter for £100.......so bargain. No sure about the water pump, VW didn't say anything about that to me.

A VW specialist near me in Liverpool quoted me £160 for the cambelt change inc all parts,
Hope this helps.

regarding the water pump, these are a poorly designed item and have since been re-designed. the plastic impellars are renowned for breaking off, rendering the water pump useless and causing major overheats.

you have to take the belt off to get to the water pump, hence why a lot of people now replace it while the belt is already off to save on labour charges :beerchug:

Hi
Seen your thread, I have just bought an A4 1.8 SE 1997, and want to get the belt done as a preventative measure. Where's the best place to go for the cam belt kit and water pump. I have been quoted £150 for labour if I supply the parts.

Look forward to your reply.
Thanks
Alan

It depends where you live if you go to 'yell.com' and type 'vw speacialist' and then your postcode in the relavent boxes it should come up with some results.
My mate is doing mine for £40 labour plus parts

I paid about the same labour for mine, I got the parts (Complete kit with tensioner) from VW £65+vat which was cheaper than the other manufacturers. So genuine parts arn't allways more expensive;)

Hi all, eventually had the job done by a mechanic friend, all belts changed, cambelt, climate belt and alternator belt at the cost of £160 for the parts plus £100 labour. Not an easy job on a Passat, he did say that there was little wear on the belts and they probably would have done another year at least. A good clean job and no water leaks:approve:

Adding to the information, my local dealer (Heritage Westbury) wanted £295 all in for a cambelt change.

Doesn't sound too bad given the price of parts....

The cambelt kit cost £60 pounds + VAT (geniene) so allot of labour in there

Itssuggested you have the Auxillary belts changed and the water pump as the whole front comes off for all these items.;)

The cambelt should be checked at each service for signs of wear and not just left alone until the time to change;)

Also watch out for the damper controlling the tension pulley movement.
On my 100PS diesel it was in a bad way and had been rubbing on an auxiliary drive belt.

Total bill from JBS of Chesterfield was £476 to include 110000 mile service plus cam belt plus tensioner and water pump etc..

On the subject of checking the cambellt for wear - is this an easy task?

Or do I need to remove a shedload of covers?:(

the cover is held on by one bolt and 2 clips so easy ;)
