I seem to have read somewhere before that there can be a problem at high mileage (mine has 148k) on the 1.9 engines with the injector loom starting to breakdown as it runs in the oil in the engine. My A4 sounds like it's running on 3 cyl at tickover, the speed is always steady, as if the engine is compensating for it, off idle and throughout the rev range it runs ok. Is this a common problem.
I've just been completing a house move and have tools and bits scattered in boxes all over- and no time too! Would a resistance check of the injectors from the ECU highlight is this is indeed the case, the internal engine loom (which is my undstanding of it) breaking down,

If you suspect the loom, you need to check the wires to each injector in turn. At the same time you need to check for short to ground / other injectors too. Then move onto the next wire etc.

thanks Alan. Can i check these from the ECU end? if not do i have to remove the cam cover?

Thanks for the advice in advance!

Hello, personally i would advise a diagnostics check as it would have logged a short to ground fault on a specific cylinder.on my own experience i would look in measuring blocks of vcds to see if you have fuel inbalance across the 4 cylinders idealy all 4 should be close to 0.00% fuel drift at idle, other known issues is worn camshaft lobbs and hydraulic lifters due to incorrect oil grade

Marc

thanks for the help. I'll run a diag check at lunch time. Oil grade is 507 spec oil so shouldn't be an issue. Car has done 148k runs ok. BUT it has been on longlife servicing, tho now I service it every 10k.

I have an A3 Quattro outside (same engine basically) that has average mileage and full dealer service history on Longlife using 507. It needs a new cam…

Can you tell by looking at them, are they generally scored?
thanks Crasher,

Sometimes it is possible to make out some patterning of the lobe peak but often you have to remove the cam to be sure, which is not a quick job.

I did a diag scan and got the following, couldn't follow Marc's advice as i still don't have the internet at home and couldn't remember your advice. I've remover the no fault code parts to shorten the post. So doesn't look anythign wrong there. How easy is it to get to the injector plugs, do you remove the cam/top engine cover, by that I mean the part like a cam cover. Advice appreciated!
