Exhaust problems

Hello all, I have a problem with the exhaust on my a3 I can't seem to seal the manifold to the downpipe i've tried 3 times now and I get the same problem all the time one side of the joint blows all the time the book says not to use paste with it. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks:1zhelp:

Is the rest of the exhaust aligned properly? If it's attached and pulling the joint sideways, it might be difficult to get a good joint.
