MPG not working

hi,
on the computer on the dash if you set it on what MPG the car is doing it does not work correctly,it keeps changing numbers rapidly then resetting itself.the dealer said computer just needs resetting which will cost £50.does this sound right or is there a sensor or connection i can check before paying out.
all else works fine.

make sure you have the DIS set to average and not instant.
Instant will give you numbers all over the place...

thanks i will check that sounds like that could be whats happening seeing how everything else seems to work
