This is the leading contender for my next phone, it will be my 1st smart phone, 1st touch screen and the 1st phone that isn't made by Nokia.

I'm expecting some pretty dismal battery life but as far as i can see from web browsing, the battery life is the only negative point.

Does anyone else have any type of HTC?

all id say is stick with what you know.i strayed into the htc market never again i had the legend,utter useless even with all the services switched off,and just using the gsm network id be lucky to get a days battery life from it. it went back to my network provider 4 times to have the (anntena) issue fixed,in the end i got them to change ive now got a nokia n8 knocks the htc legend into a battered hat,battery lasts around 6 days and thats with me giving it heavy use.

I have had the DHD (desire hd) for a month now. It is easily said the best phone I ever had. it's amazing, blazing speed, big and beautiful screen, email is coming instantly and lot's of apps online. it is very much like Iphone but bigger, faster, internet-browsing better and of course very stable (in my opinion). Haven't had a problem yet that requires restarting it. it is just faultless and soon to be upgraded to the new android version.
One piece of advice! Get yourself a proper holder (brodit) and you will have a charging station that will help. I am heavy user and the battery last a day and a half.

Go ahead buy it and you won't regret.

upgraded????? is this a downloadable firmware upgrade? from what version to what version?

i planned on a brodit but i.ve not researched any yet untill i have the phone.

i'm also a heavy user of web.

What network are you on? i don't mind the phone being locked to a particular branded sim but would prefer HTC os as HTC intended i.e. not 'tweeked' by the provider.

Ben, there isn't such a thing as HTC os. it doesn't exist. HTC make phones on Windows Mobile, Windows Phone and Android operating systems. So far Android is the best as it is very stable and fast moving. it is being developed constantly and the new release of Android has just come out. it is called Android 2.3 Gingerbread. at the moment an upgrade that will be available to all HTC Desire HD users is being prepared. By the way I forgot to mention that T Mobile have not tweaked the software. So it is almost like an unbranded phone.

I think he's referring to the update from 2.1 > 2.2 (Eclair to Froyo) Ben.

I'm in a similar position to you. I was going to go for the Galaxy S, but Sam's had the Desire for a while now and is over the moon with it.

I much prefer the look of the Desire, especially now with the HD attribute, looking at the two of them and the equivalent support/fans for each, the Desire is the clear choice.

IMHO, the N8 isn't capable of keeping up with these big boys, Symbian is a very solid OS and has proved trustworthy on the 5800 I have now, but it's playing a new game with old tricks.

The legend wasn't the most successful phone, admittedly, but it's unfair to judge an entire firm on the back of one phone or antannae issues. If we all did that, Steve Jobs would be broke.

not sure where you're up to with your decision, but I've just managed to get a deal on retention/upgrade with VM.

I've opted for the Desire HD and will report back once I've got it (should be end of next week, fingers crossed!)

Snap - bar the 24 month thing, I found Orange useless with retentions, but some people do well out of it - you're one example.

I've managed to get VM to offer me 600 mins, 1gb data, unlimited (well, 3k) texts all on an 18 month contract.

As for the forum app - what were you thinking? Maybe shoot Sam a PM?

On 2.2+ the battery life is vastly improved btw - Got an HTC desire Black. Excellent phone, especially the maps! (1Ghz snapdragon, screen is responsive, and supports mutlitouch.

Flash is great, camera isnt bad. Generally very user friendly!

Also Wifi hotspot! Great for web/laptop use

Hi Ben, I've got the HTC Desire HD (actually doing this msg from it) its great! Battery life is good you can buy another high powered battery for it. Features and functions are top notch, can't live without it! I'm the envy of the office and the majority of them have iPhone 4's.......just buy one mate you won't be disappointed.

The biggest killer of smart phones batterys is the brightness of the screen. Turn it down and you will improve your battery life dramatically.

If you go to type a new msg press the 12# button near the bottom right, then a new menu will appear, press the 1/2 button on the bottom left - the GB £ symbol is 3rd in from the top.

Im quite happy with the keyboard that's pre installed.

Has anyone witnessed the music player skip through songs and do weird sh*t? Driving me mental.....I have to force it stop and then go back in and prey it doesn't start jumping!

Just joined up to the Desire club and am very impressed so far. Instead of the Swift keyboard, has anyone tried Swype? Very quick, almost as quick as typing on a full sized keyboard!

Also if you use Firefox, Fox to Phone is great at sending links, text, images, etc to your phone.

I may still switch back to standard yet.

In the widget list, there are numerous 'dashboards', however, none are quite what i want.

the standard dashboard is the thing across the top with 5 buttons, wifi, sync, bluetooth, gps and brightness.

others contain different buttons like roaming, 3g gprs data etc etc.

There isn't the facility to create your own personal dashboard as far as i can see.

the torque app has been updated.
