Smoke comming through air vent audi a4 Avant 1998

Worryingly, smoke has started to come through my air vents.
This happens even when the air con unit / manual fan is turned off.
An engineer has recently diagnosed I need a replacement fan as it has been intermittently working.
Engineer disconnected fan but somke is still appearing?
Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Not sure why the smoke is coming through now, but I do know that the blower fans in these vehicles, and Passats are very common for going faulty. I would have thought that by disconnecting the fan that would have then stopped it smoking..

Hi Stuart,

Thanks for the note. A new fan unit has been installed so this works like a wind tunnel. Unfortunately smoke still comes through the vent after approx 5 mins driving.

hope its not steam cos of a duff heater matrix.
does the smoke have a smell?
