View Full Version : Emission Control warning light

I just got back from taking my eldest to nursery and noticed that my emission control warning light has come on. Does anyone know what might cause this?

(The weather here has been horrendous and we have over a foot of snow. I reversed out of my drive and could have got snow in my exhausts if that is a possibility?)

Cheers

Do you think I should take it to the dealer to do that? Or get someone with the hardware to do it? Does anyone here have the hardware in the Newcastle/Durham area?

The emissions control light is what used to be called the MIL or CEL. Whatever you call it it means there is a fault logged in the ECU that requires attention.

I wouldn't take it to a main dealer to get it scanned, they will charge you £90, find a friendly local with VCDS or go to an independant garage. Most will only charge around £30. Make sure you get a print out of all the error codes.

If I were to buy one of these myself, would this suffice:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220703535337
or
http://www.ecrater.co.uk/p/6206725/vag-com-vcds-106-hex-can
???

Yes providing they say it is compatable with your car. The Ebay leads can be troublesome but I have one and it works fine on my car.

There is a free version of VCDS-Lite, or you can register it for £50. The registered version gives you access to all the fault code descriptions, allows you to do a full scan and allows you to turn off the light. If you get one do a scan and post the results on here and we will see what we can make of them

Sorry, I think I edited my post whilst you were replying. I found a VCDS-lite (the ebay link) and another one based in China which is VCDS 10.6. What is the difference between the two?

The one in China is a cloned copy of the full version of VCDS. It is a pirate copy. It probably wont work and may even knacker your car.

Personally I would avoid it like the plague. Not least for the fact that Ross Tech (who make VCDS) already provide a free version of the software, and you can register it to unlock the other features for £50. Most other diagnostic software costs a hell of a lot more than this so it is worth supporting them and not buying clones.

The other one is a generic cable that works with the cut down version of VCDS, which is called VCDS-Lite. This should be sufficient for your needs.

Thanks for the information. I have ordered the VCDS-Lite cable. Do you think I should be able to run my car until it arrives? I would only be doing short journeys and not on motorway.

I wouldn't like to say really. It depends on what the fault codes are.

Well, I just went out to the car to test it and the light has gone out. I chanced it and went to pick up my son from nursery and it remained out. I guess having the VCDS will be useful in the future...

That's always the way. The codes will still be logged so will be interesting to see what had happened.

Having VCDS will pay for itself in no time.

Oh thats good, I will post the codes once I get the cable and figure out how to use it!

Could be EGR valve causing the emissions light to come. This can be intermittant?

Ok, so I finally got round to installing VCD-Lite and attaching it to the car. What should I scan for? Note, I dont have the registered version yet so cant do a full scan. I want to make sure the cable works properly before I splash out $99 for the registered version.

Cheers

Press the Select button on the Select Control Module option. Then select Address 01 - Engine that will connect to the engine controller. Once it has finished connecting click the Fault Codes button under the Basic Functions group

Thats what I thought and it cant find the controller. I guess that means the cable I got is naff?

Do you have the ignition on when you try and connect? No need to start the engine but the ignition needs to be on.

Yes I had the ignition on. It successfully scanned 08 (Auto HVAC) but not 01, 02 or 03...

Alan, :aargh4:

I'm sorry I've only got to your post today.

You may as well throw that thing in the bin because it is no good for your car at all.

...It successfully scanned 08 (Auto HVAC) but not 01, 02 or 03...

Well it would. Your car (I presume your signature is up-to-date) uses a mixture of technologies for diagnosis of the different modules in the car. It uses dual K-Lines for most of the modules but, crucially, it uses the newer CAN-bus for Engine(01), Auto Trans(02) and ABS Brakes(03). So unfortunately the interface you bought is a door-stop for you now.

However, you live very close to me and I have a VCDS interface that will do the job. PM me with your details if you would like me to pop down and take a look.

So I finally got the full VCDS and have done a scan. The controllers that are showing faults are below. Does anyone have any insight as to what these mean? Are they safe to clear?

Many thanks
Allan

Both faults in the engine controller would seem to point to a problem with the MAP sensor:

Do you know if this is a big job to replace?
