retrofitting DIS?

Ive been reading up on teh interwebs, and found a few posts that have suggested retrofitting a DIS, or at least the whole gauge cluster, is possible. This allegedly is due to the fact that all the sensors are in place, the ECU knows how much the fuel consumption is etc.

Is it a case of getting the correct stalk and cluster to make this work, after a bit of fiddling with vagcom?

Anyone got any input as its something i want to do.
