Appologies if this has been asked before, but........................

Just got back from the dealer after a routine Service and been advised I need a cambelt change.

I have had the car (5 years old) from new and it has done only 35K miles.

The handbook says replacement is not due till 80K but makes no reference to age.

Any advice much appreciated!

Change it.
We had a Clio once with a snapped original belt after 40k and 7yrs.
I'm sure almost all manufacturers have a 5yr age limit.

It's very unlikely yours would fail in the next year or two but I'd be surprised if it lasts to 80k at it's average annual mileage.

Your handbook is out of date as its also as old as your cam belt!

5 years is as long as you should leave it due to fatigue in the rubber due to age. Compare the price of a new engine vs. the price of the cambelt swop. You get absolutely no comeback or warranty assisstance from Audi should a 5+year old belt snap.

OK, thanks fellas.
Sounds like I'd better get that done as soon as!
