Hi guys. I i have a Golf GTI mk6 fitted with an RCD510 stereo and a 4th generation ipod classic. The problem i have is that the ipod will not charge. My local vw dealer has just stated that the latest ipod is not supported. Do you guys know if this is true or if there is a way around it. Thanks for you help.

Welcome to the forum. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/KStanier/VBwelcome.gif
Does this iPod plug in to the MDI USB lead, Aux socket or the radio direct?
If its MDI then I would have thought it would have charged from there.
According to the Golf brochure pdf the standard RCD310 should charge so I would have thought that he newer one should ;)
The Multi Device Interface (MDI) with iPod and USB cables enables you to connect and charge a compatible device,

I use the supplied AUX lead to connect an 8GB Nano to the RCD510, which lives permanently in the armrest. Out of curiosity, I've tried an iPod Touch as well as the Nano when the battery indicators on both were in the red and after a couple of hours of driving, they were both showing a full charge.
I only remove the Nano about once a month in order to sync new music I've downloaded but the rest of the time it sits in the armrest, connected and ready to go AND it always plays from where it was when I switched the ignition off.

Not sure if you have the same problems there that we have in the states, but we found was that many of the cars are running 12V and the newer ipods will not charge on a 12V input, they only will charge on 5V, so VW came out with an adapter cable that steps down from 12V to 5V. The part number is 000-051-443-C. I don't know for sure that this is the solution, but it may be worth looking into.

Thats a good thought bub@cfvw he would have to check the spec of the iPod. ;)

Im sure the 4th Gen Ipod Classic (came out in 2004) requires a 12v firewire charge, where as the 2008 onwards require a 5v charge using a different pin config.
You can purchase one of these :- http://www.ipodcarkitdirect.co.uk/images/2009_12_07_16_30_06_CTIPODCONVERTER.jpg
Which converts the pin config and voltage from 12v to 5v and enables you to charge the ipod, HOWEVER, I have not tested it with the MK6 golf interface so unable to confirm if it works fine and allows all controls. (i dont see why not as it works with a Dension kit, but do some research and buy at your risk. :p)
You can buy them on ebay for around £13.
Search for 12v to 5v converter.

I use an aftermarket DC charger I got at Fry's in the U.S. with an USB jack output. It works very well, though I also noticed some ground loop buzzing when charging and listening to my iPod. So I only charge it when I'm not listening to it.
I suspect any DC - USB charger would work. I think mine cost $6 with various cable attachments included.

VW would have to be fairly stupid to advertise iPod connectivity but only to charge the old iPods.... The MDI connector can do USB, so I'd assume it was a 5v anyway. I think only the oldest iPods can't do USB.

Like I said, I've managed to charge a late 2008 Nano and 2 late 2009 iPod Touch which were at about 10% charge status, via the AUX cable input to the RCD510. I don't think there would be any variation to this whether the RCD510 came in a Golf or Scirocco or any other VAG model.

Its the other way around, charges new, but not old.
