The diff bearings are in your case for the front wheel drive

I'm sure some of the MK3's suffered a problem with the 5th gear shaft as it is remote from the main shaft (due to it being a modded 4 speed) and higher up in the box. A drop in oil level meant the shaft bearings would cook themselves.

Does it do it in any other gears ?

Have you checked the box oil level ?

I might be talking rubbish here but do vaguely recall hearing about this once or twice in the distant past.

Revert to answer set A then if it is in all gears.

Diff or shaft bearing(s).

is this a hands on job or proffesional job ?

Gearboxes ARE rocket science in my mind.

You need lots of specialist tools and getting the bits to repair could be tricky. It is said that unless you've been taught how to do it or are aware of what needs to be done, leave it alone. I'd get a 2nd hand one or an exchange recon.

I think you may require a recon box as it will be the easier option as gearbox repair is time consuming and requires special tools and mechanical skill
