Government research reveals that an average of 240 cars suffer attempted break-ins each and every hour in Britain
The most secure car in Britain is an Audi, according to the findings of the Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre at Thatcham, which held its first ever security awards ceremony today and honoured the A3 hatchback and A8 luxury saloon as the most impenetrable cars in their respective classes.

The Audi A8 range can lay claim to the title of Britain’s most secure because it not only features a full complement of safeguards, including Thatcham Category One alarm and immobiliser technology, but is also the only model range to feature laminated side glass for maximum break-in protection as standard.

In today’s British Insurance Car Security Awards, the A8 scored the highest number of points ever allotted to any car on sale in the UK, beating 12 other models in its segment. It scored 5 stars for both ‘theft of’ and ‘theft from’ security, and consequently picked up the best-in-class award in the Executive/Luxury category – one of 11 categories judged by Thatcham experts.

This endorsement makes the Audi A8 the most appropriate transport for senior executives and other high-risk passengers either driving themselves or being chauffeured.

Five stars for ‘theft of’ and four for ‘theft from’ security, plus an unparalleled points score secured the best-in-class award in the Small Family Car category for the Audi A3 compact hatchback, which also features Thatcham Category One approved anti-theft technology.

The importance of car security has been emphasised by expert estimates indicating that, on average, around 240 vehicle break-ins are attempted every hour in Britain. Audi owners can take comfort in the fact that the brand’s Vorsprung durch Technik philosophy extends not just to the engineering of outstanding cars, but also to the design of the most protective security systems currently available in this country.

Thatcham is one of Europe's leading authorities in the field of vehicle security. Its experts have been assessing the theft protection standards of vehicles for over ten years and use a star rating system to reflect a vehicle's standard of theft protection. These New Vehicle Security Ratings have been co-developed by Thatcham, the Association of British Insurers, Lloyds, the AA and the Department for Transport, all of whom back the awards.

Commenting on Audi’s success, Director of Audi Kevin Rose said: “ It will be enormously reassuring for our Audi A3 and A8 customers to know that their cars are officially confirmed by Thatcham's research as the most secure of their respective types. It is also particularly rewarding for our engineers to know that their excellent work has resulted in industry leading security standards. This could not be more appropriate for the 'Vorsprung durch Technik' company ”.
