VW ecu reflash

hey does anyone know what you need to connect you cars ecu to a laptop?? i have re flashing software called REVO but i do not know how to connect it up on the cars ECU?? any ideas.

the sixteen pin socket is the only way without expensive equipment what car and year ?

its a 1998 golf mk4 1.6L manual.

16 pin socket is the only way located in the centre console at the bottom just above the ash tray.......................
