Hello All

I have a 1996 Audi A4 1.8. I asked a local guy who does car repairs from home to replace the front upper offside suspension arm as it was rattling like a tube of Smarties. I had all my brake pads replaced a month ago and everything was working fine except for this suspension arm.

I picked the car up yesterday and I thought all was well until I braked hard. The car slows fine and brakes fine until you get to a stop where just before it stops I can feel a grinding/vibration through the brake pedal, you can hear it as well. If you brake hard it does it straight away. I took the car back and he said the back plate was against the disc and he adjusted it. However this problem didn’t go away, I went back to him again and he said he can’t explain whats causing it. The knocking suspension arm is gone but now my braking is causing me frustration.

Any ideas?

sounds like the abs is kicking in. it could be due to the ring being damaged. work on the front does often upset the abs.

so what could that mean? A whole new sensor?

Could be that he's disturbed the sensor or got dirt on it.

Neither is an expensive fix.

I spoke to Audi and they said its either the sensor been disturbed (as there is no ABS warning light). Or he's knackered the ring if he's had the hub off. His mate who was there at the time told me that he did take the hub off.

Is it difficult to put right or should I go to Audi for a fix........and how much will they charge?

[QUOTE=TonyMc;573288] grinding/vibration through the brake pedal, you can hear it as well. .Any ideas?[/QUOTE

If you can actually hear grinding, and there is no
ABS fault code flagged or recorded, then i would look
at the possibility of a small stone or piece of metal
being jammed between the pad and the disc.

the faster I go and the harder I brake the worse it is. Its fine slowing, its just at the point of stopping that it happens.

whip the wheels off and inspect your ring, it should have no broken or missing bits, or any chips.

Can I just see the ring without pulling anything apart?

pull the wheel off, and its on the cv joint, but is visible.
