Autobox locking up in limp mode on/off for a long time, persevered but finally lost 5th then 4th , did oil change and filter, no joy. Checked wiring , seems ok, it will try to engage then nothing, either limp mode or no drive ?

Car not worth a recon box or rebuild, a real shame cos i like my old passat , what are my options if any ?

Not even my local "specialist wants nothing, to do with the vw boxes, they are a pain in the **** " he says, does anybody have a sensible solution ?

Fault codes are incorrect gear ratio 5 , 4

PLease help a vw lover keep his old girl driving

Cheers

hi mike vw have the worst gearbox in history. what has the dealers said? my point of veiw the megatronic unitin the gearbox becomes faulty by over heating and a lack of oil to the sensor. so the oil pump in the gearbox fails due to the lack of oil.

Think the biggest prob is the fact when it does work its a gd box, car very rarely lets me down and ive had it so long , grown attached to it , sad i know. Have sourced another box and its on its way up to me , will just have to work it hard before warranty runs out to make sure its ok , if you want one to strip down , i have a free one here, thanks fahad :beerchug:

if you wasn't so far away (like totally the other end of the country), i would have had the gearbox to rebuild and then left it here until someone like yourself came along who needed a cheap auto gearbox;-)
can i ask how much you paid for your new gearbox and was it secondhand or a re-con??

Hi toonmania, gearbox i sourced ( with correct code !!!!! ) was from written off car , no confirmed milage because its insurance write off but some warranty , prices varied betwwen £400 - £700 delivered . Mines was bout £450, not changing it myself , never get time outside work, due some favours anyhow so some1 else can have the pleasure lol. Do you rebuild them yourself ??

Dundee isn't far from Brighton :p

If it were in Glasgow I'd bring it back down the road for you when I'm home for Chrimbo, but Dundee.... that's miles from Glasgow :p

Good luck with the swap! I too am like you and get attached to stuff :Blush2:
