Afternoon all.

Im trying to get to the bottom of an annoying idle problem on a mk3 .8 abs engine.(87k)
So far to date.
Checked timing(all ok)
Checked for any leaking pipes/throttle body gasket etc.
Checked operation of temp sender on block.
Kicked car repeatedly.
But no joy.
It drives fine with plenty of power but on idle it kind of misses between 850rpm and 1000rpm and the exhaust burbles like an impreza.Fuel consumption is good too.
Also on cold start up it over revs a little to about 1000-1100rpm until it gets warm.

Sooo today i decided to do a compression test and it goes like this.

1-180psi
2-150psi
3-150psi
4-115psi

I dont know what it should be as standard as my haynes manual has that page soaked in oil so i cant bloody read it!

Anyone got any ideas?

Im building a new vr6 turbo engine to go in after xmas but i want this one to run right while im waiting to pop that one in but im stumped.

Thanks in advance.

I will dig it out tonight after work, i need to look it up for another chap too. Would have done it sooner, but have had a busy few evenings this week.

Btw my cold startup can be as high as 1200 if its really cold this doesnt last long though, stars dropping after 30-40 seconds or so :P

Nice one sammo much appreciated.
This one seems to rev itself and takes a long time to drop back down.Bloody thing lol.Be pleased when i get a proper engine in it!:beerchug:

from what i have found in the haynes

ABS
----
Bore - 81mm
Stroke - 86.4mm
Capacity - 1781 cc
Compression ratio - 10.0:1

Showing compression wear limits for ABU, AEA, ABD, AAM of 7.0 bar
Showing compression wear limits for ADY, ADZ, ABS, 2E, ABF, AEK of 7.5 bar

Wear limit of 108.75 psi for yours i think after rough conversion

This sounds like the problem I was having with my 1.4. The compression is getting so low that it doesn't always ignite. You spend ages trying to sort out a misfire when it is the cylinder itself that is at fault.

Thanks for that Sammo will have another goosey at it.The sooner i finish this Turbo engine the better methinks. Its a pain spending time on an engine you know your removing lol.
