View Full Version : MMI High version 55.7.0 - error occurs...

Hi All,
I recently purchased an A6 (C6) with MMI High (2G) and found the MMI software was out of date. I managed to get hold of some Audi update disks (4L0 998 961) to update the software to the very latest version (55.7.0.)
I used disk 1 and disk 2 without a problem, which updated the MMI to version 51.5.0 and re-installed the Bluetooth module (had to run disk 2 twice) – However, upon loading the 3rd disk and selecting to do the software update, the following error occurs:
MMI Hi/MMI/EPatch.bin
Error 176 from device.
The software update then stops and the MMI restarts and tells me I am still on version 51.5.0. I have tried multiple times and the same error occurs.
Anyone know what the error code is?
I am thinking perhaps the disk is corrupt? I can read it on my PC without a problem - but there still might a problem with the file it is trying to access?
On that note, does anyone have the audi 3rd disk I could try - the other two disks are fine, its just the third one.

sounds like the disc is faulty but try individual controller updates if possible

Thanks for the info.
I managed to find another copy of disk 3 on the web, but that failed with exactly the same error.
The weird thing is, I think I know what's wrong?
The error is stating there is an issue with the 'EPatch.bin' file in the MMI Hi\MMI\ folder - but i think the problem is because that file does not exist in that location. When I read the disk on my PC that file does exist - but in the MMI HI\MMI\EepromUpdate\ folder.
The question is, why does the update think to look in that location for the EPatch.bin file? The metainfo2.txt file references the correct location of the file, so it isn't that.
If anyone else has disk 3 (preferably an official Audi one...or even one that worked) could they look at the path for this file, just to make sure it correct.
How can I update the individual components - I have tried selecting\de-selecting the checkboxes for each component, but cant get it to do it.
One thing to note is that I updated from a very, very early version of the MMI - version 05.0.0 or something similar. However, the update to 51.5.0 went smoothly and didn't report any errors, so i don't think that's the problem.
What would happen if i did the update from the beginning, using disk 1 again?
:1zhelp:
I "should" have a set waiting for me in the office tomorrow, I'll check them out and let you know.

I've just checked the disc 3 I've got and it seems it's exactly the same for my one...the file is in the EepromUpdate folder.
ok, sorry for the delay I just got back from Brands Hatch and only just had the chance to drop the forum a note.
I managed to upgrade 3 out of 4 items using the 1st disc (still got 2 more to go) , I saw that Epatch.bin file fly by during the upgrade and it worked ok on mine.
I'm out and about for a few days then should be able to get cracking on the other discs. Will report back when thats done.
http://www.nostrebor.eu/tay/Scaled%20Image.jpg
Which brings me on to a question regarding the upgrade.
I have a 6 disc changer but I keep seeing references to a Dension <insert number here> on forums, can I assume that the changer is standard but there is a bolt on somewhere that gives me ipod access?, I found this on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Audi-Approved-Dension-Gateway-500-Apple-iPod-MP3-Kit-/280546480851?pt=UK_AudioVideoElectronics_PortableA udio_MP3PlayerCarKits&hash=item4151df92d3#ht_1072wt_907
I have the same changer, and ipod connector but I cant see the other unit..likewise I cant see a USB connector anywhere.....maybe I need to stuff my camera behind the unit and see what it reveals?
Does the ipod thing mean I have one of these units?
If so and that is what is failing the upgrade (see IDC1 fail below), can it be updated?, is there any point in doing it?
http://www.nostrebor.eu/tay/Scaled%20Image%201.jpg
If I do have the unit should I have a USB cable knocking about somewhere?
thanks
I'm gradually figuring out what my car had bolt on wise..
I have (I think) completed all the MMI/Tuner/Bluetooth updates via the 3 disc set.
I thought it got a bit upset as I lost my telephone (Bluetooth) for a few hours whilst I tried the updates again.
However, after re-applying those updates again I've discovered that I now have SDS. Had a mess around with it on the way to work today and it all works.
Is this an undocumented feature? have I unlocked something I shouldnt have?
I noticed that during the update it did something called handyvorb2, handy is what the Germans call mobile phones, the update was: handyvorb2/main6/app which was an upgrade from 0 to 1130.
I'm guessing it was that bit that did it.
This update took something like 45 mins!!. the largest single update there was thus far.

Tay,
All seems about right, is the "SDS" full control i.e. music systems control or just telephone i.e. phone book?
If you have MMI high the telephone speech control is standard although not always enabled! My local dealer had no clue how to enable this!
You may find that you have lost your battery meter and the ability to adjust you speed alarm, mine disappeared anyway. You'll need vcds to re-enable these, and you local dealer will probably not have any clue how to do this either:dunno:!

address 07 adaption channel 2 add 32 to the current figure and save
adaption channel 111 set to 1 reboots and now you have battery display in car menu
sds can be lost when updating as there is a conflict with dsp so just re enable sds
always pre record adaption channels in address 07 prior to flash updates to re input user settings lost
you may also lose mmi control for heater functions, if so i will tell you the channel value
if you have dension 500 fitted just put into service mode to eliminate it from the most network for updating

Just speech control for me. I got mine enabled by reapplying the patch. working nicely now.
ok, my speed alarm is 95 so not so bad...I'll check battery tommorow

Erm ok...I'll check
I do indeed appear to have lost the Battery and speed warning settings, also noticed I have lost access to the on board computer 1 & 2 settings.
Is there a definitive guide to what settings I should have?

Hi Tay,
You should find a guide within the handbook, you'll also ned to find someone with VCDS to reset these. I took my car to my local audi on the off chance last weekend but they didnt have the first clue about pretty much anything!!!! So much far a "Master" tech eh :biglaugh:

Hi A8 Tech,
Thanks for joining in on this, maybe you can shed some light.
I updated my A6 with the genuine Audi disc set ordered from Wolverhampton Audi as I needed to enable my SDS Bluetooth system (why Audi do not enable this as standard is beyond me!), as this post I lost my battery and speed control amongst other functions as a result.
I have since taken my car to 2 audi dealers, Cardiff & Bridgend, and both have hooked the car up to VCDS (Or what ever they use) and come up with no solution.
Is this soemthing they should be aware of? or is it just the privateers who actually know anything about Audi's, my main concern is that I spend a large amount of cash annualy to service and keep my Audi's via main dealers and I am starting to question capability here.
I am not having a go at you here bud, but I am genuinely confused as to where the circa £100 / hr goes.
Cheers,

Time taken is clocked so every minuet is charged for open time diag.
The dealer should be able to re set the adaption channels and its well documented how to do it and what channel needs what value as 90% of mmi 2g updates lose battery and heater set up.
I will post the channels and how to in min so you can see and even take the info with you for them to set it up.

for sds then you must decode the voice control in address 77 as it conflicts with voice control
that's if you have voice control fitted, if not then add the function via address 77 (telephone)
missing functions after mmi up date
go to address 07
go to adaption function (10) in 07
Adjustment channel 01:
Function: enter the installation list for the MMI function CAR menu.
exterior light
parking assistance (acoustic parking system), front
parking assistance (acoustic parking system), rear
tyre pressure warning system
sun roof
adaptive air suspension
raintronic sensor
seat adjustment, front
seat adjustment, rear
multi-function steering wheel
lane changing assistant
lane staying assistant
reversing camera system
Adjustment channel 02:
Function: enter display option for the MMI function CAR menu.
LHD -> an even value in the adjustment channel indicates RHD
Show chassis number (VIN) (standard)
Show oil level
Digital radio (DAB) picture transmission
Show battery condition
adjustment channel 11:
function: enter the additional MMI functions
owner's manual available (standard)
speedo / on-board computer
air conditioning
auxiliary heater
Adjustment channel 12:
Function: enter phone type
without fixed installation phone / phone preparation
fixed installation phone
phone preparation
all values to add are here http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Audi_A6_%284F%29_Control_Head_Front_%28High%29#Ada ptation
phone coding values for sds
http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Audi_A6_%284F%29_Telephone_Preparation#Coding
so in address 07 you need to add value 32 to the value already saved in channel 2 for battery display
and in channel 11 add 16 for speed display
I need to know if you have voice control, if you do not then just enable the telephone code to allow speech dialog system if you do you need to de code the phone so it uses the function via voice control
scan the gateway and if you see this
address 67: Voice Control Labels: 4E0-910-75x-67.lbl
Part No SW: 4E0 910 754 K HW: 4E0 035 753 A

Shop #: WSC 12336 024 394758
VCID: 2E589E46C065
you have voice control, if you dont then you need to recode address 77
address 77: Telephone Labels: 4E0-910-336.lbl
Part No SW: 4E0 910 336 F HW: 4E0 862 335

VCID: 254A616A9593
this car is set for voice control to operate mmi functions for phone radio phone etc, if you only have phone then the sds will only operate phone
so change the sixth digit to 2 000020 for sds retaining all the rest of the original code of address 77 (phone)
make sure also the amp is coded correctly http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Audi_A6_%284F%29_Sound_System_%28Bose%29#Coding

Thanks for that A8 Tech, but the rosstech info is what I printed out to give to the master techs / service department, they looked very blank when i showed them what was needed to be done!
Am I correct in assuming that ALL master techs are trained to the same standards by Audi? or are there differences? if so, what Audi garage would you suggest I take my Audi to to get the items reinstated?
It's quite commical you know, my experience so far is that the 2 main dealers I have used (And mentioned) are probably only good for service light resets as far as VCDS is concerned (and even that was naffed up on my last service, I had to go back as it was showing 1500 miles to my next service after I spent £1100 on cambelt and major servive with tyres).
I think it may have been better buying a Ford or Vauxhall, at least you can warrant the £30/hr as what you'd expect for crap service:biglaugh:

In short no, the qualification is the same for audi bmw merc etc but individuals vary for there knowledge base and experience, most older master techs will also be a8 licensed and fully conversant with software coding and systems but you need to find a good master tech as we are not all the same as you have found.
The mimi master tech qualification is difficult to pass but its based on practical fault finding tests as well as information gathering but if the individuals lack this then its no reflection of the test as its a very high standard unlike the individuals you have dealt with
If you were northwest based then I could resolve the problem within 10 mins, as my avatar shows my main role is A8 AND R8
Please do not compare us all to your recent findings

Thanks for clearing that up A8 Tech.
It's just a shame that when a manufacturer makes a complex car / system and charges a premium for it, they don't invest in sufficient training systems / information sharing mechanisms to allow resolutions of somewhat simple issues. My first issue with the A6 (SDS & Bluetooth) went all the way to Milton Keynes (Head Office?) too, but I found the anwser on here!

They do, each site should have a network and convience specialist who can deal with these simple soft code issues, however you can take a horse to water but !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But that assumes that I know what I had to start with :)
I keep finding stuff everyday, although now it would seem that the battery dying is symptomatic of something else. Its in the shop, they found a fuse blown but nothing else. So they are charging the battery and see what happens.
Aside from the MMI update that seems to have taken a few settings out my ipod 5th gen and iphone are the only things that "might" have caused an additional drain.
Up to Dudley in my wifes Saab tomorrow then :(

Try this Audi TSB - basically the radio/cd stays on even though no sound or display and draws power, then flat battery.
Need to update the MMI, to latest and battery problems disappear, I have a 2005 3.0tdi quattro with a battery that audi dealer said needed replacing, I refused, some investigation on the web and found this http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/3/13/883667/audi.tb.91-07-13.pdf which has fixed it, still same battery, just newest mmi software, never failed in 2 years since.
The car was parked for 4 weeks whilst i was a way and battery was 100% on return.
It really cheeses me off that Audi dealers charge £100 odd per hour for "professional" labour, and all thet can come up with is new battery, a quick scan through their own TSB's would highlight the problem.

Not always, the tsb OR TPI AS WE REFER TO IT IN THE UK, simple amp test after 2 hours standing will show a drain which then can be identified using battery manager.4f A6 mmi drains are often the dsp amp and the phone control unit but only by checking for a drain correctly will you establish this.
If the tpi matches your issue then great fault fixed but if not then further invest is required.
Most dealers reduce the labour rate for vehicles 4 years or older, roughly £60 per hour in line with independents

Tks, but I'm pretty sure I'm on the latest firmware updates, only issue seemed to be the IDC that I've been told I dont have. So I can only assume the unit isnt there.
I did have my iPod connected for 2 days, that "might" have been a draw on the battery, the battery should be fully charged by tomorrow, then I'll see how it goes, but I'll have a booster battery with me for the next month or so, just in case...

sounds like the bt is already fried and also the cd player has gone into cp mode, you need to go to the dealer and release cp.
Also when you access the hidden menu click on the handyvorb and see what sw/hw version is displayed

what is BT and cp mode for cd? its loading cds but not playing then so i cant do anything with the update cd's, and the HANDYVORB is not on the meniu anymore, have i done something wrong during an update or is it a common problem?
BT is the Bluetooth module - part of the Telephone Preparation.
CP mode for CD is referring to Component Protection mode for the CD changer in the glovebox. CP is a security system built into components to prevent them being stolen from one car and fitted to another. Each component has to be coded to the car it is fitted to or it will not work properly. With CD changers, CP mode means that CDs will play, but the sound is cut every few seconds. CP needs to be removed (by coding the module to the car) by a dealer with special equipment.

I took my car to the dealer last Friday and they kept it for the whole day just to tell me they dont know whats is wrong with my MMI, they said there are no faults reading when they check it, ive read somewhere that it will not show up as a fault scanning with WAG-COM and that you need VAS to release the CP, so if the mane AUDI dealer dont know whats wrong with ir or how to fix it, how should i?
can someone tell me if any of that is true and (or) maybe direct me to someone who can sort ir out? thank you

You will need VAG - COM or VCDS to enable the secret menu, when in there you can select the Battery Meter Display Active. Audi will not do this for you though.

For battery level use:
The easiest way, at home is to use Vag-Com and do the following:
Connect VAG-COM
Select Control Module "07", Click on "Adaptation"
Select Adaptation Channel: 08
0-Hidden Menu Disabled
1-Hidden Menu Enabled
Enter value "1"
Click "Test", followed by "Save"
Close & reboot MMI by pressing "Tel" + "MMI Control Knob" + "Upper Right Selection Button" (all together)
Press "Car+Setup" together until hidden menu appears, takes about 5 seconds
Then scroll down to Diag Settings and press enter
Then scroll down to Car Menus Maske (this is how it is spelt on the UK MMI) press enter
The find Battery Level and press enter
Scroll down the the bottom and press Accept Changes
Press the return button 3 tmes to return to the front screen
Close & reboot MMI by pressing "Tel" + "MMI Control Knob" + "Upper Right Selection Button" (all together)
Taken from audiworldforums.com - I think the trip computer should be there as well
