Everyone bangs on about the download speed but what about upload speed.

Its taking me ages to upload videos of my son to youtube.

Sky basic broadband, netgear router.

Is there a way to increase my upload speed that doesn't cost any money?

Upload speeds are usually about a quarter of the download speed. There's not really much you can do to speed it up, other than making the file smaller.

I'd expect the upload speed to be at least 512kb/s, so a 1MB file should take 15 seconds. How big was your file?

it was a 5 min vga video of 383mb.

I reduced the quality from 720p to reduce the file size.

That's the drawback with ADSL - the A stands for Asynchronous, meaning your download and upload speeds are different. Some business broadband packages offer SDSL, giving you equivalent upload and download speeds, but these are usually expensive.

Sadly the speeds are set by your ISP's wholesaler and there's only a limit on what can be done. There are other technologies out there but they cost a lot more.
