cooling fans running all the time

audi A3 1.6 sport 2001 this fault is intermitant, the cooling fans run even with the engine off and the keys out of the ignition till the battery runs flat, when the engine is running the traction control light is lite. when the fault clears the light goes out. It seams to happen once a week.
Any help would be greatfull..

I would be tempted to go for the fan switch first.
