Hi

Really undecisive in which A4 Avant to get::aargh4:

2007 2.0 TDI (170) s line
or
2006/7 2.0 TDI (140)

The reason i am confused is that ive read on many topics through this forum that the fuel economy is very poor on the 170 and therefore was looking at the 140.

drove a 2007 170 last night and was impressed but im yet to drive a 140. my car history dictates very fast cars however times chang and the adult approach is now needed..... i think

still want a quick car but one thats NOT going to cost me the same in fuel as a petrol.............if that makes sense?

hope there are people out there with an opinion as my choice of which to get is now just getting frustrating.

thanks
Chev

i would say go for the s line, but if you were worried about fuel costs you could get the 140 and a ECU remap could bring it up to 175 bhp anyway while still preserving the better MPG that the 140 bhp gives you. all depends on how ya drive it in the end

My previous car was an old 3 series bmw with 140bhp (0-60 in 10s).
I was looking for a replacement with slightly better performance, better economy and a large boot where the seats folded down flat.

I went to a dealer and test drove 3 cars and ended up buying an a4 20 tfsi quattro s-line which didnt really match what I set out to buy.

So my advice is really just to give them a test drive. You might well be happy with the lower performance of the 140. I would suggest you also test drive a quattro s-line as they do handle much better. Going from a rwd drive myself I didnt like the way the fwd cars handled which is why the quattro caught my eye.

I have the 170 s line saloon. Nice car that drives well and has reasonable performance. However, I probably do a 50/50 town/A road driving and for the past 2000miles have returned only 42mpg. Not what i was expecting when i bought the car! That said my car has 19" wheels which also does nothing to help fuel economy and my previous car (Nissan X-trail) only returned around 37mpg so im not overly disappointed with the a4 especially when i leave the wife behind in her Golf 140bhp :biglaugh:

I would stay well away from the 170 and go for the 140
The 170 is not at all economical and theres always the dreded piezo injector problem @ nearly £1000 a pop the extra oomph is just not worth it.

I recently bought a 140 s-line and am well happy with the power and fuel economy.Yes you could get it remapped but would this wear the clutch quicker as my friend has a seat cupra r which he had remapped and this is the problem that has risen.:p

well I've got a 170 sline, 07 36k miles, had it 2 months and am pleased as punch. cost me £14k, and feels like its worth twice that.

I have the 170 and now wish i would have had the 140 with a remap. The fuel that the 170 drinks is just not worth it for the minimal improvement in performance (my view). Truely lovely car though what ever you decide.

what is the dreaded piezo injector problem on the 170 ??? I have just bought a 170 tdi se. I love it . It is replacing a 130 tdi sport. the difference in performance is great. not had it long enough yet to check economy.

I'm also looking at buying the Avant. I quite like the look of the 2.0T FSI Quattro.

I'm coming from a MK5 Golf 170TDI which has been remapped to 204bhp. It's a cracking car to drive, although it's not the most economical diesel I've owned but then I do have a heavy foot. I just don't the mileage now and I would end up having lots of issues with the DPF.
Does the 140TDI Avant have a DPF fitted? Or was it fitted after a certain year?

If you do mostly town driving or short runs, then avoid any VAG diesels with DPF's!!
