The gear knob is part of the gaiter. You lift the gaiter up over the knob and you should see a kinda hose clip that crimps around the gear shift lever. Cut that clip and the knob and gaiter should lift off.

I am thinking of changing the gaitor myself as it is worn. I do need to change the gear nob aswell, but after being quoted £155 for the pair from VW I thought better and bought the gaitor off ebay for £15. If you were to break off the clip, how would you fasten the gear nob back on once the gaitor has swapped.

Sorry, I don't know about that. Any I've replaced have always had the gear knob attached.

The black ring here is apparently what you need to remove. However, I'm buggered if I can do it!

http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/thread/720846.aspx This says you need to clamp it in a vice, I've tried that and it still won't move :(

I pulled the gaitor from that black clip on mine, then stuck a flat head screw driver into the part where the gaitor was and turned it. it came off with no problems. does this help?

Yep cracked it.

The new gaitor is an ebay special and not tailored like you would expect of a VW item. However it fits well enough to satisfy me :)

Did it in the end with a willing volunteer holding the gaitor as I yanked the knob (ooer). Once it's off that's the hard part done.

Here is a photo of the innards....
