thanks in advance, been messin with it all day and my brains are cooked.:(:aargh4:

The pump fires up for 2 seconds with the ignition on then waits until the engine is cranking then the pump fires up again. Is that what you have. Regards Peter

J17 ( fuel pump relay ) gets power from the J322 the Diesel direct injection system relay The output of J17 is fed to S28 the pump fuse. J322 is in the electronics box in plenum chamber. Relay position 3. Regards Peter

yay got it started, gave the ECM on top of injector pump a light tap (well several quite heavy ones atually) and she spluttered into life. took it to my local indy audi speialist (onlyvw in Blackburn) who put it on diagnostic check that showed up the ecm fault but it didn't reccur when he cleared it, so i'll be carrying a ball pein hammer round from now on.

Do you mean the fuel cut off valve. What was the ECU error code. Regards Peter

not sure what ecu code was i was just so relieved to have it running. i mean the electronic box which is mounted on top of the injector pump internet sites call it electronic control module (ECM).

What electonics box. There is a connector for the immobilizer interrogation and the fuel cut off and diag wire but that's about it. This still sounds like a connector problem or a sticking valve ( FCV ). Regards Peter

He means the ECM on top of the injection pump that the multipin plug goes into..
It's a common problem due to a MOSFET that drives the quantity adjuster (IIRC) getting dry joints
