My Mate has a caravan, and said I can borrow it anytime, problem being I don't have a tow bar, however I believe my audi a4 avant s line 2005 comes with a detatchable tow bar as an extra, the person that sold me the car obviously did not take that option, do you know how much it was cost by audi to fit one ???:beerchug:

Hi, I have a dec 2005 a4 1.9 tdi and have just had a detachable bar and 13 pin electricts fitted by portland towing in lincoln (01522 545473) They know what they are doing and my model did not require recoding the swan kneck is fitted upwards and the electrical plug swings up under the bumper so you would not know a towbar is fitted total cost of job £425, I know you may not wish to travel that far but they will advise you and who knows you may feel you could fit it yourself, The bumper does require cutting but it so low you cannot see anything hope this helps a little mick.

Thanks very much for that, I was hoping only to spend £300 max but if its such a good job I'm sure there are other places closer to myself in Scotland that could do the same Thanks again

There is a towbar place in Ratho (near Edinburgh Airport) Buchans I think - not sure about price but they have a good reputation with friends who have landrovers (tractors IMO - but each to their own;)) - Might be worth a ring to see what they'd charge.

You'd easily get to £300 on parts alone for an aftermarket detachable towbar and plug in wiring kit. You need a plug in wiring kit/box of tricks to work with our hi-tech electrics! - gone are the days of a few scotchlocks and bob's your uncle. There's the CAN to think about - so not for the inexperienced.

Might even be worth speaking to Jim at Star Performance in Dysart - just down the road from you (good independent specialist) - he might know a man if they weren't up for it themselves.

For what it is worth - I think Audi use Brink towbars. The Audi install also includes a towing module which apparently this means :

"- The car will know when it’s towing via the ECU and then compensate by reworking braking efficiency, ESP settings and engine cooling settings.
- If the car is equipped with Xenon headlamps, they will automatically adjust to correct height settings using information from the towing ECU.
- Any bulb failure warnings on the light board are communicated to the Driver via the Drivers Information System (DIS)
- Trailer Detection; if the Audi is an A4/A5/A6/Allroad or Q7 and equipped with electric tailgate. The function is automatically disabled with the message “Trailer Detected” appearing
in the MMi screen. (obviously doesn't apply to us B6ers)
£995.00 inc fitting*":aargh4::aargh4::aargh4: (quoted from Kings Lynn Audi Accesories brochure).

Having seen that price I now realise why all the Audi dealerships have such big glass windows as a design feature - it's so they can see you coming - a mile off!!!!:D
