:zx11: My parking brake has just failed on! I can't seem to be able to release the parking brake no matter what combination of clutch pedal, brake pedal, seat belt fastening, gear engaement etc is used. The dash warning light is on and the info display annouces parking brake fault (no kidding). Has anybody got any advice on how to release the brake and what the root cause is for repair? Car is a 2006 2.0TDI with 80,000miles and first issue of this problem in one year of ownership.

usual answer is to disconnect the battery for 10 mins (need 10mm spanner), you could also try disconnecting the parking brake switch - open drivers door, lever off end of dash with screwdriver in the slot, push switch out from behind, disconnect wires, repeatedly press switch on/off and shake it about, throw up in the air etc then try again - worked for me!

To hatry, Thanks for the advice. Just tried it and it worked. Disconnected the battery and jiggled the switch (could get it out easily so did try much more to).

it's a relief when you hear the motors finally wind off, isn't it?

Might pay to buy and fit the later type switch, just in case it happens again. About £25 ish from VW.
