newer cd player in an older Audi

Hi all , Sorry if this is a bit dumb and obvious, but................

I was thinking about putting a newer stereo in my 1998 cabriolet because the current Sony one is abit cack and theres gaps either side that I cant get the plug peices for , I was wondering whether a newer audi stereo would slot in and fill the gap so to speak:o
