Newbie. Desperately need help.

Hi To all, My son has got a vw Passat 1,9 tdi 2000 model and the turbo went, we sent the turbo away and paid on an exchange basis for another one. Now 3 mnths later the new one has failed. We returned it to the company who have told us that there is something wrong with the car as both turbos show damage to the impellor. They say some foreign objects are getting into the turbo, via air intake or engine. Is this possible through the air intake, also bad luck to happen twice!
Can anything get into the turbo from engine to cause this sort of damage?

anything entering the air pipes will no doubt end up on the turbine. check inside the airbox for grit etc , also lift the filter out and check underneath .may be the intercooler is falling apart also ?????????????
