Hi, Ive got a 2006 2.0tdi a3.
got 40k on the clock.
went from leeds to stevenage a couple of times. After a while of the car running, and going considerable speeds, it makes a noise, like metal in contact with metal, as the engine ticks over.
It does it on idle, but also when the clutch is down, it does it worse. It only makes this noise after long-ish trips, but the engine temperature is always at 90 (middle on the gauge- so not overheating)

I took a video of it on idle, after a 2.5hr trip, and the sound is on there too.

One neighbour said it sounds like the clutch bearing, in which case its a £500 clutch refit.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
dan.

There's a metal plate between the engine & the gearbox, sounds like the back of the flywheel is touching it. This normally happens when the engine is hot or when the clutch is pressed (this causes the flywheel to move away from the gearbox & towards the engine, allowing the flywheel to touch the metal plate)

The usual place for the flywheel to touch the plate is above the offside drive shaft, there's a bolt in section of the plate that's removable, this is normally mis-shaped slightly. I'd check there first.

All you need to do is reshape the plate slightly.
