I am wanting to buy a second hand or used Sharan. Currently we have 2.8 VR6 or 1.8T Sharans available. Which one do I buy? When I look at various forums on the internet I have found that there appears to be a few problems with the Automatic Gearbox and I have had experience with auto box failure in a Jetta 3 so I will buy a manual. There seems to be a major problem with the 1.8T motors in the USA with oil sludging and oil pump failures. So far it appears that some VR6 motors have head gasket failures, but other than that they seem reliable.

It seems to me that the VR6 motor will be the better one. Does anyone have any comments or advice for me

Thanks

OK I guess there are 3 questions to reply to so here goes:
1) The SEAT was only launched here in South Africa last year and so far they have only launched the IBEZA, LEON and ALTEA so I have not seen an ALHAMBRA.
2) The only FORD which is equivalent available here is the FORD TERRITORY which is very expensive.
3) With respect to the auto box. My son has a Jetta 3 with an auto box. The car had done about 80,000 kms(50,000 miles) when the auto box went into emergency mode and selects 1st, 3rd and reverse. The local VW agent told us they dont fix the gearboxes they send the car to a gearbox specialist, because we know some of the guys they told us who to take it to. We had it towed into the gearbox specialist who plugged it into an analyser to find that the gearbox ECU is blown and it would appear the solenoids in the box are faulty. The gearbox guys told us this is a common fault that re-occurs on this 020 gearbox. We then checked on the internet and found lots of complaints about this gearbox. We are currently in the process of scrapping the auto box and converting it to a manual.

Why the reason for buying a Sharan? We currently have a Mercedes A190 long wheelbase and find it is too small for the twin pram, 2 x carry cots, nappy bags etc. My wife and I are registered place of safety for abused and abandoned new born babies and either have 1 or 2 babies at a time. We have been doing this for 10 years and so the problem with respect to transport will remain with us for many years to come.

Thanks for the response so far
