Hello, i am considering buying an a3 1.9tdi 110bhp or 130bhp (mileage over 100k) version, but just wanted to know if there are any common problems with these cars and which is the better model to buy?

thanks

See here (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=95591) for Crasher's advice on 1.9 TDIs - especially the PD versions

Ive got a 2002, TDI sport (130) Bullet proof!! ride a bit hard after a few miles, 50 ish miles to gallon, about 600 to the tank. just make sure the belts have been changed, and has a good service history. The long life service (every 2 yrs) works out not too bad to take it to Audi.

Very pleased with mine.

I liked the Mk4 GT TDI Golf ( 110 bhp) but then I am biased as I had one for 10 years and 145,000 miles. I think the A3 extra cost when new was not justified. Mechanically they are the same but if you wanted a 5 door then this would be much easier to find in the Golf.
The 110bhp engine was at the time (1999) one of the most fuel efficient engines in the VW range. I used to travel 60 miles to work ( 120 mile round trip) over mostly dual carriageways and used to get between 54 - 62mpg depending on time of day and traffic. I averaged over 600 miles from each tankful. The best I got was 670 miles with a few liters spare. As an experiment I travelled all one week at a steady 60mph and got 68mpg but couldn't keep that up as it was boring !. The handling was comfortable rather than sporty. Body protection was very good with the wheelarch liners and thick PVC coating in the vunerable areas. After over 10 years had no rust anywhere.
I only hope my new MK6 Golf gives me the same service.
