Hi all - my very first post :-)

I was introduced to the world of Audi around 18 months ago when I "inherited" a leaving staff members company car. It was a standard spec 1.6 Audi A3 (57 reg).

In November, the lease is up, and my allowed budget will allow me a 1.8tfsi A4 SE 120ps.

If I pay around £15/m out of my own wage on top, I can get the 160ps model instead.

So.....

Does anybody know how much of a difference it will make? I've seen the stats (i.e. 8ish seconds 0-60 instead of 10ish seconds) but does anybody know if the overall feel is significantly improved enough to warrant the extra money?

I'm not the kind of person who has to have speed, but it's always nice to have a bit of extra ooomph under the bonnet.

I'll be stuck with it for 4 years so I want to make the right choice!

Hi

I tried both (120PS & 160) and found the 120 to be a bit underpowered. Went for the 160 and am really happy with its overall smoothness and performance.

In an ideal world budget permitting I would have plumped for the 2.0 TFSI 211PS

Hope this helps

Hi

Many thanks for this, it certianly does help.

I was swaying towards the 160ps, and you've pushed me ever closer to that decision now. As i'm stuck with it for 4 years I didn't to think to myself every day that I wish I went for the more powerful version (if you'd said "the difference is barely noticable" then I would have had a rethink).

Thanks again

Was having a mooch around my local dealership yesterday and there was an Brand New A4 1.8TFSI with the ABT upgrade kit and bodywork (badged AS4) on the forecourt which had been tuned from the basic 120PS to 211PS!!?!!. Too expensive IMO

And THAT! WAS an AUDI dealership (in Germany).

I am driving a 160ps A4 and it is very capable at UK Road speeds.

I now have a new dilemma...

whether to go for the 160ps SE, or the 120ps SLine.

I guess it comes down to whether I sacrifice a bit of extra power for the better alloys and styling of the SLine. Oh, and the xenon headlights....

120 BHP just sounds far too underpowered for a large car like the A4. I would go for the 160 every time if i had to choose between these two.

Test test and test again... your lease company should be able to provide demo versions with both engine powers, that is how I decided when choosing mine. Given your choices, S line 120 for me... SE is a different car, might as well be a focus, nothing special at all. S line, thats different.. especially at night when your lighting the road up for everyone else :)

What's the point in having a car with an s-line body kit which only produces 120bhp????Just doesn't make sense to me.do yourself a favour and get the 160bhp version s-line or no s-line,otherwise you'll be struggling to keep up with a Polo.

Style vs Speed!

Your choice. People look at the SE and it could have 250bhp, it's still an SE. People look at the Sline and it could have 100bhp, it's still an Sline. How are they to know what's under the bonnet if you don't plan on speeding everywhere or racing at lights.... I've come up against 3.0 Sline Quat's and they didn't race away from the vauxhall's, fords, etc. Still looked pretty awesome though.

My mate has the SE and I went for the Sline. Knocks spots of the SE. I wouldn't care if his was a 3.0, I would take mine over his everytime.

I agree S line is a much better car than an SE.. but I still can't get over how low 120 BHP is...

Maybe get the 120 Sline and get it chipped? Surely this can be Revo'd to 160?

superchips will sell you a do it yourself kit that takes both the 120 and 160 to 200+ bhp

S Line is much more than a body kit... drive the S line, its a different car to the SE! that you cannot change, now the amount of power the engine produces you can, and its very easy these days.. I've done it on mine, 2.0T performance with 55pmg :o

Perhaps this might be controversial but I don't like the S Line - the suspension just isn't up to dealing with the carp road surfaces so common in the UK these days. I'd take the SE with a the difference spent on a couple of options any day.

I had an S-line with the stock Sports suspension for 6 months. I found that it could be a bit too harsh on some surfaces and there could also be too much roll and movement when cornering etc.

When I got the car replaced I specified the Dynamic suspension. For me this is ideal as it gives me two cars in one and I get the S-line styling etc.
