Hi, this is the first time I have posted to here, so I hope I get it right??

I have a 1996 2.0lt petrol (auto) SHARAN (carat).
The problem is when reversing the car, say around a corner the most severe of grinding noises comes from the front of the car, I know it is not the brakes.....but it is almost deafening!!
It hardly ever does it when driving forward, but if it does, you can just about hear it.

Please advise anyone??

Could be loads of things but firstly have a quick look underneath the car and see if the plastic protective sheet under the engine ibay s hanging down, they can come detached at the back end and make a hideous noise when reversing as the back edge digs into the road. Fasten it back with either the proper clips or cable ties - 50p fix if it is that but DON'T work under the car with it just on the jack

thanks for that, its certainly not that, it sounds like metal on metal, but its really really load and worse when in reserve on full lock.
