the rev counter is at 2500 at tick over and the engine ticks over at its normal speed.

no havent checked for faults on the ecu, cant understand why the needle moves it self up and dosent come down, the car itself isnt affected in anyway.

may be its a dash faut but you can do tests on it but you need to plug in with a good scanner or vcds ,if it was a rpm sensor fault the car would do any amount of silly things.

ive reset the needle 3 times to 0 but it end up working its way up the rev counter.....its sitting at 2500 with the engine off

You need the panel replacing or rebuilding by an instrument specialist of which there are quite a few now. Bear in mind that with the clocks out, the car will not run.

what actually causes this and would there be fault codes?

From what my repairers have told me, it is poor quality components that fail. About half the Golf 4 panels I send for repair cannot be fixed and I have to buy and code in a genuine exchange unit, which can be a real pain even with the appropriate specialised software. Usually there are no fault codes.

could i put in a second hand rev counter without having to code or maybe a new rev counter? that way i wouldnt replace the whole thing needing to code too.

I have never pulled one of those panel apart, simply takes too long to do compared with having it fixed for me or fitting an exchange unit. It is a different world when the clock ticks by at £55 an hour.
