Hello Everyone

POOSnip here...

I love the pre 2000 passats.

I have a question.... well a few actually.

I recently took ownership of a nice 98' Passat saloon 1.8 20v turbo AEB and I wanna get all equipment needed for a timing belt change and a service. Does my car have a hydraulic tensioner? Do I just buy the standard Cam-belt Kit or the Full hydraulic conversion kit from Europarts? I don't know how to find out. Is there another identifier or something?

Pictures included: attached!

Does anyone have a list of service basics?

Also

There is also an intermittent whirring sound (quite faint) that disappears after the car has been running up to temp. The owner said his mechanic had told him it was the "jockey pulley" or something. The car has done 84k life (MOT and HPI Verified). Perhaps a full service and aforementioned timing belt change is exactly what is needed. Engine is smooth and apart from that initial whirr it's feels ok. The turbo whistles faintly, it comes in at 2500rpm but should see how a service affects the performance!

I have been on europarts to see about cam-belts and water-pumps (There are many water pump choices here too). Which one is mine?

Also I wouldn't mind any details of a good VW specialist around Manchester (20 mile) wigan, preston southport, bolton. Someone who will do the job, is honest and leaves the engine bay clean and intact! This is my second passat, the previous has been serviced by a local fella who I have began to trust less and less!

I think i am in love with these cars, suspesion arm issues not withstanding!

Well thats my story. I love the car it looks mint, Drives well and sometimes feels better built than my E-class 280D if a little less trick. I still marvel at how this interior moved the game on in 1997! They dont make'em like this anymore..

Those suspension arms though:aargh4:
